Giving appreciated stock is one of the most powerful and tax-efficient ways to support our mission. In most cases, you give significantly more by giving stock than by selling it first.
If you own stock, mutual funds, or other appreciated securities, you may be leaving significant value on the table by selling them and donating the cash. Here's why: when you sell appreciated stock, you pay capital gains tax on the profit. That reduces how much you have available to give.
When you give the stock directly to a nonprofit like Twenty35 Initiative Fund, you bypass capital gains tax entirely. You receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value on the date of transfer — and we receive the full value of the stock to put to work for our patients.
The result: you give more, keep more of your income, and support our mission at the highest possible level.
❌ Sell stock, then donate cash:
✅ Give stock directly:
Example uses 15% capital gains rate. Consult your tax advisor for your specific situation.
If you hold stock, ETFs, or mutual funds that have grown in value since purchase, a direct gift avoids the capital gains tax you'd otherwise owe. The longer you've held the asset, the greater the potential tax savings.
For donors planning gifts of $1,000 or more, stock giving typically delivers significantly more value than cash — both to you (in tax savings) and to us (in dollars received). It's the preferred vehicle for serious philanthropic gifts.
If you hold company stock, restricted stock units (RSUs), or other equity compensation, gifting appreciated shares can be a particularly powerful strategy. Discuss with your financial advisor how to integrate this with your equity plan.
The process is simpler than you might expect. Here's how it works from start to finish.
Before initiating any transfer, reach out to us by email or phone. We'll confirm our brokerage account information, let you know what to expect, and ensure the transfer is attributed correctly to your account. This also helps us thank you promptly.
Call, email, or log in to your brokerage account and request a stock transfer to our designated charitable account. You'll provide the brokerage name, account number, and DTC participant number — all of which we'll give you in step one.
Tell your broker which stock and how many shares to transfer. If you have shares purchased at different times (different "lots"), consider specifying the shares with the lowest cost basis — those have the largest embedded gain and produce the greatest tax benefit when donated.
Most electronic transfers complete within 3–5 business days. We monitor incoming transfers and will notify you as soon as we receive your gift. The date of transfer is the date used for your charitable deduction — not the date we sell the shares.
We promptly sell the donated shares and direct the proceeds to Grace Medical Home and our mission partners. You will receive a written acknowledgment letter with the date and value of your gift for your tax records.
You receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the shares on the date of transfer — not your original purchase price. Include this in your tax filing. Your deduction is not reduced by any capital gains, because you never paid them.
Many types of appreciated assets can be given with similar tax advantages. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
Shares of mutual funds and exchange-traded funds can be transferred in the same way as individual stocks. The same capital gains tax avoidance applies.
Once RSUs have vested, they become regular shares that can be donated. Gifting immediately after vesting, before significant appreciation, is often a smart strategy.
Appreciated cryptocurrency can also be donated to avoid capital gains. The IRS treats crypto as property, so the same rules apply. Contact us to discuss the mechanics of crypto giving.
Gifts of private company equity are possible in some circumstances and require advance planning. Please contact us well before any liquidity event if you're considering this type of gift.
